Sue Ann Van Dermyden, JD, AWI-CH, is a founding member and Senior Partner of Van Dermyden Makus Law Corporation.  An employment attorney since 1993, Sue Ann’s practice focuses on conducting and overseeing workplace and Title IX investigations and providing expert witness testimony on whether workplace investigations meet industry standards.

Sue Ann Van Dermyden, JD, AWI-CH, is a founding member and Senior Partner of Van Dermyden Makus Law Corporation. An employment attorney since 1993, Sue Ann’s practice focuses on conducting and overseeing workplace and Title IX investigations and providing expert witness testimony on whether workplace investigations meet industry standards.

Sue Ann is known as a trailblazer and thought leader in this field, building and leading one of the largest teams of attorneys nationwide dedicated solely to conducting workplace and campus investigations. Through her experience as an attorney, investigator, author, speaker, professor, entrepreneur and student of investigations, Sue Ann is a sought-after speaker and expert witness. She has expertise in, and extensive involvement with, formulating industry standards.

Sue Ann is also a Shareholder and Senior Faculty of T9 Mastered, a training company run by experts to train individuals how to conduct Title IX sexual assault campus investigations that comply with industry standards. She is also a Shareholder and Senior Faculty of VM Mastered, a training company dedicated to training in-house workplace investigators how to conduct prompt, impartial and thorough workplace investigations that comply with industry standards.

Sue Ann’s commitment to and passion for improving the quality of workplace investigations globally is demonstrated by her role with the Association of Workplace Investigators (AWI). She is a founding member of AWI, established in 2009. She was on the Board for 10 years and served as its President for two years. She has been and remains a Senior Faculty of AWI’s five-day Institute since the Institute’s inception in 2011. She was instrumental in creating the course curriculum for the Institute.

In 2025, Sue Ann was given the distinguished honor by her alma mater, the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law, by being named a 2025 Alumnus of Honor—one of then only 40 graduates with this distinction. McGeorge School of Law’s Alumni of Honor award recognizes alumni who have exhibited outstanding professional achievements, demonstrated a commitment to the legal profession and diligently served the communities they live in. The award honors alumni who are renowned for their leadership, expertise and lasting impact.

In 2024, Sue Ann was recognized as one of the Women of Influence in Law by the San Diego Business Journal. This is an annual recognition program by the San Diego Business Journal that honors leading female legal professionals in the San Diego region. Honorees are selected based on their career achievements, professional accomplishments and contributions to their organizations and the local community. This award recognizes the significant impact these women have made in the legal field. 

From 2020 to 2023, Sue Ann was also an adjunct professor at her alma mater, McGeorge School of Law. She created the curriculum for and taught the law school’s first course on workplace investigations.

In 2022, Sue Ann was honored as one of five by the Sacramento Business Journal’s “Women Who Mean Business” award. This is an annual program by the Sacramento Business Journal that honors accomplished and influential professional women in the Sacramento region. The awards recognize women from various industries for their career accomplishments and impact on the community. Nominations are based on merit and achievement through an independent editorial review process. 

Since 2022, Sue Ann has been a contributing editor to The Rutter Group California Practice Guide: Employment Litigation, providing substantive and strategic guidance on new case and statutory law (Chapters 16 and 19). The Rutter Group publishes a well-respected collection of authoritative and practical guidance for California and federal legal professionals.

Since 2019, Sue Ann has been an active member of the McGeorge School of Law Alumni Association Board of Directors. She has also served on its Executive Committee since 2023. This Board serves as a dedicated advisory group that strengthens the McGeorge School of Law community, playing a vital role in enhancing the school's reputation, supporting student success, advancing fundraising initiatives and fostering meaningful alumni engagement.

Since 2015, Sue Ann has been elected as a Fellow to the College of Labor & Employment Lawyers—the highest recognition by one’s colleagues of sustained outstanding performance in the profession, exemplifying integrity, dedication and excellence.

Since 2015, Sue Ann has been recognized by the Sacramento Business Journal’s “Best of the Bar.” This is an annual recognition program by the Sacramento Business Journal that honors top attorneys in the greater Sacramento area, selected through a peer-review process in which lawyers nominate their colleagues. This award honors outstanding lawyers who have demonstrated excellence in their legal practice, strong ethics and the respect of their peers. 

In 2015, Sue Ann was a member of the Investigations Standards Technical Committee of ASIS International, charged with preparing standards and guidelines for workplace investigations. ASIS International is a leading authority in security standards and publishes American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-approved standards dedicated to investigations. 

Since 2014, Sue Ann has been the co-chair of the Workplace Investigations Subcommittee of the American Bar Association (ABA). This is a subcommittee of the ABA Employee Rights & Responsibilities Committee within the Labor and Employment Law Section.

From 2010 to 2024, Sue Ann has been annually listed in Northern California Super Lawyers. Super Lawyers selects Northern California Super Lawyers through a patented multiphase selection process that includes peer nomination, independent research and peer review. The annual lists recognize a small percentage of attorneys for their high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement.

Since 2006, Sue Ann has been an active Master of the Anthony M. Kennedy Inn of Court. She has served on its Executive Committee since 2023. This organization’s mission is to promote civility, ethics and professional excellence to advance the rule of law and public trust in the Justice System.
