ACC Arizona Chapter CLE Webinar- Navigating Workplace Investigations: A Guide for In-House Counsel
Title: Navigating Workplace Investigations: A Guide for In-House Counsel
Date: June 3, 2026
Program: 12:00 PM–1:00 PM
Your phone rings. It is your Director of Human Resources, and they have just received a complaint. What happens next—and the decisions you make in the hours and days that follow—can define your organization's legal exposure, workplace culture, and credibility for years to come.
Join Erich Knorr, Partner at Van Dermyden Makus Law Corporation, for a practical, real-world look at how in-house counsel can effectively navigate workplace investigations from the moment a complaint lands on your desk through the final report. Drawing on extensive experience conducting investigations, Erich will walk you through the critical decision points that trip up even seasoned legal teams—including when to bring in an outside investigator, issues related to interim measures, and where the line falls between your role as counsel and the investigator's role as fact-finder.
Whether you're fielding your first workplace complaint or your fiftieth, this session will give you a sharper framework for managing investigations that are thorough, defensible, and legally sound.
Learning Objectives:
Identify the key factors for determining when a workplace investigation is warranted and when to recommend retaining external investigation counsel versus handling a matter internally.
Distinguish the separate roles and responsibilities of in-house counsel and the investigator, including best practices for managing communications and decision-making authority throughout the investigation process.
Recognize common investigation pitfalls—including issues related to interim measures and attorney-client privilege—and apply strategies to avoid them.
Erich Knorr is a Partner at Van Dermyden Makus Law Corporation and he leads the Tempe, Arizona office. He is a licensed attorney in Arizona and California. His practice focuses on workplace investigations related to harassment, discrimination, retaliation, and misconduct.
Erich is an experienced investigator who has conducted complex investigations in many different industries in the public and private sectors.
