Law Student Diversity Scholarship Program – 2L/2E/3E

Van Dermyden Makus Law Corporation is excited to announce the third year of its Law Student Diversity Scholarship Program, open to incoming full-time second year day students and part-time second and third-year evening students.  This program offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in our Firm’s unique practice of conducting workplace and Title IX campus investigations. Van Dermyden Makus is known as one of the top investigative law firms in California and our Scholarship Program will offer high-quality training and hands-on experience.

Our Law Student Diversity Scholarship Program includes two phases. First, the selected student will join the Firm for a paid five-month Law Clerk position during the 2024 Spring Semester. Second, the Law Clerk will have the opportunity to return to Van Dermyden Makus for a full-time paid Summer Law Clerk position during the summer of 2024. If the student is accepted to return as a Summer Law Clerk, the student will also qualify for a $5,000 academic scholarship. The $5,000 scholarship will be paid following completion of the 2024 Summer clerkship.

Hybrid and remote work is available. Applicants from law schools throughout California are encouraged to apply. 

As a Law Clerk at VM, the selected student will have the opportunity to do the following:

  • Assist attorneys with drafting investigative reports, documents, and correspondence

  • Review, interpret, analyze, evaluate, and summarize witness statements and documentary evidence

  • Assist attorneys in preparing for witness interviews

  • Shadow attorneys in all aspects of their investigations

  • Perform other duties as appropriate to the skill and experience of the candidate, and the needs of the Firm 

Requirements:

  • 2L/2E/3E law student at a California Law School

  • Interest or previous experience in Labor and Employment Law, preferred

  • Strong writing skills, required

  • Strong listening and communication skills and the ability to accept and implement feedback

  • Ability to assess facts with impartiality and eliminate personal biases

  • Must be able to maximize time and effort in addressing position responsibilities, as well as quick adaptation to changes in priorities

  • Positive, professional and approachable attitude and demeanor and the ability to collaborate with others

The expected hourly rate for this role is $40/hr and represents the Firm’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent upon a number of factors, including but not limited to, the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
